    At the risk of over-taxing our ancient database, we’ve enabled live updating of the “Queue and Top 20” pages. Hopefully this will reduce confusion about missing entries and improve the interactivity of the contest. The contest runs on a set of old Perl (frontend) and MATLAB (backend) code, most of which is about 10 years old now. Fortunately, this spring we’re planning to rewrite the contest to use the same modern web architecture that runs the rest of MATLAB Central.     This just made me laugh.It seems these are the worst of times to be a militant in Kashmir. First, a Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist was axed to death by a teenage girl in Rajouri roughly a month ago. Now, a bear has mauled two Hizbul Mujahideen militants to death as they hid in its cave in Shopian, South Kashmir.According to defence spokesman Lt Col J S Brar, the two commanders dared to colonise a bear's cave at Darwal Nar in Pir Panjal in Shopian and paid for it with their lives. For, late on Sunday night, as the two slept, the bear came calling.

    My latest Locus column, "Teen Sex," explains why I think young adult literature should have sex -- and other "mature" topics -- in it. There's really only one question: "Why have your characters done something that is likely to upset their parents, and why don't you punish them for doing this?" Now, the answer. First, because teenagers have sex and drink beer, and most of the time the worst thing that results from this is a few days of social awkwardness and a hangover, respectively. When I was a teenager, I drank sometimes. I had sex sometimes. I disobeyed authority figures sometimes.

    One thing that adds to the unique nature of the WPX Contest is that single operator entries are limited to a maximum operating time. While there have always been a few operators who chaffed at the idea of having to get off the radio, most people seem to enjoy the ability to be competitive without the stress of going sleepless for two days! For many years the limit was 30 hours. Even though it has been 20 years since the limit was raised to 36 hours, we are still getting requests to return to the 30 hour limit. The survey seemed like a great opportunity to find out what the participants think.

    I spent two hours today determining who will win the 49 sponsored trophies for the 2009 WPX SSB Contest. There are a lot of great ops who fought their way to the top of their category or region!
